In my last article, some considered me a little blasphemous when I asked:  Was Steve Jobs a Leadership Dinosaur?

In that article I spoke of the innovations and advancement Jobs had brought to our planet and I said that I admired his single-minded drive for innovation.

However, despite the near- mystical aura that surrounded him especially right after his death, I also said that as a leader he lacked certain qualities that are needed in this, the new economy.  He built a highly successful company but I questioned whether that’s enough today.

You see, the path to lasting leadership is not as easy as it was in the days preceding the recession. It used to be that we put people in leadership roles because they looked the part or they had charisma or could issue orders that were obeyed. It turns out that’s not enough — Surprise!!!

The reins of power have shifted.  People are sick of having to tug their forelock in hopes of receiving favor from the great and often entitled one called “the boss.” Rather than look up to the untouchable, aloof leader of yesteryear, people now want to do business with, partner with, and purchase from Transparent Authentic Leaders that they can reach out and touch and trust.

To be in business these days you better know how to get down and play at the level of the people you serve….wherever that is. And you can’t do that without having relationship.

That being said: relationship is NOT a one way street,

You Will Have To Let Your Employees, Co-workers, and Customers In.

As comfortable as the last generation of business leaders have been off in their ivory towers, the new leaders in business are going to be just as comfortable with really letting their co-workers and customers in.  New leaders are going to have to learn to speak to those they are in contact with rather than at them.

Doing this is changing the landscape of corporate culture

If you want to succeed in the new economy, you will never get the level of loyalty it takes if you don’t let the people you work with know you as a person. People no longer want to be part of, or even do business with a faceless corporation. In the new economy it is all about Transparent, Authentic Relationships.

So how do you do this?

Transparent Leadership

Let them know YOU. Let them see that you are a real person, rather than some corporate entity resembling a human being. 

Your imperfections can and will assist you in your journey to being a highly effective and Authentic Leader because people want to know that they are not the only ones who have struggled. Forget yesterday’s leadership agenda of charisma and aura mystique! If that’s not who you really are, they will see through it far faster than you can imagine.

Remember people want to follow, and do business with people they trust, and that can’t happen without transparency in relationship.

Possibly one of the greatest side effects of becoming more open and transparent in your leadership is that you will inevitably attract more like-minded followers. Rather than sitting in locked office and having to pay gatekeepers to protect you, you’ve got to be with those you work with.

As an Authentic Leader, your followers will naturally bring to you only people who are aligned with your business values (because no one is left guessing about what you want because you are fully present and transparent). This, by its very nature generates a corporate culture that is building momentum upon the leader’s values.

The implications are far greater than customers, or even “C level” executives. Being an Authentic Leader who transparently communicates also means you are likely to attract investors and a board of directors to your company who get where you are going. They understand the vision and are far less likely to fight against the next level you are working to take your organization to.

I would suggest that, as an Authentic Leader, you make it your imperative to become known.

Further, I suggest that you do this in all forums, whether it’s in person, shaking hands through introductions, giving presentations, or even in the environment that scares so many still battling with holding on to the old model of leadership– social media.  No matter where you are, there’s a need for you to authentically show up so that those whom you wish to follow you understand your vision, your driving values, and your style of leadership.

How are you being transparent with your colleagues, employees, and customers?

If you’ve not been being transparent, what is it about this that you find uncomfortable?

If you are being transparent, what results are you seeing?

Finally, do you really want to succeed in this new economy?  Then know it’s going to mean giving up the old familiar models and putting yourself out there as a transparent Authentic Leader.

Apple Store Memorials

When Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs died, people left loving notes at every Apple store around the world. There was tremendous gratitude for the innovations and advancement Jobs had brought to our planet.

However, there was something else going on in direct response to Steve Jobs’ passing– “The Canonizing Effect.”

This is an odd phenomenon that often occurs when someone dies. We instantly erase all their “sins” and turn them into some kind of saint. Once they are gone, we suddenly seem able to say only “nice” things about them and what they did. We don’t feel like we can bring up any of their faults or flaws. (don’t speak ill of the dead etc)

As a result of this canonizing of Jobs, one of the things that I experienced was that I began hearing people in the leadership community speak of how they wanted to be the kind of leader Jobs was.

Really?  People wanted to emulate Jobs’ leadership style?

Let’s be clear–there were many things about his leadership style that were highly admirable. For instance, his single-minded drive for innovation was remarkable. However, there was another side, to Jobs as a leader.  He was oftentimes nothing short of cruel to those under him and very much isolated and unapproachable. (You can read all about this in the book Steve Jobs)

You might argue, “Yeah, but his style of leading worked. Apple Inc is a vastly successful company and the #1 recognized brand in the world!”  Of course, you would be right.  Apple is one of the most successful companies in the world. However, the question that rises here is not one of Steve Jobs’ innovative genius, (which I highly respect), but rather his ability to effectively lead now and in the future.

Therefore, we are left to consider:

Was Steve Jobs a Leadership Dinosaur?

We have to consider what it takes to be a leader, more specifically an Authentic Leader in this, the new economy.  As we move forward, we must face the fact that the old model of leadership, based on being unapproachable and speaking down to those under our leadership will no longer work. It does not build loyalty either with our teams or with our customers. Fake relationships, which in many ways were the back bone of the old boys club are the kiss of death for doing business in the new economy.

Unless you are completely ignorant of the economic changes and the impact of how business is operating today, you now know that business is and will be done via relationship, real, nurtured relationships.  (This is one of the fundamental reasons, and rightly so,  why women are becoming the dominant force in business)

Now hold on a minute!  Don’t let that little Chihuahua in your head start yapping about how you already know all that.  We aren’t talking about the old fake smile, pat you on the back, and then badmouth you behind your back kind of relationship.

That is the old model.

The outdated model.

The model that just won’t work anymore.

In the new economy you better be willing to “show up” and let people actually see you. Transparency and Authenticity go hand in hand.

Authenticity will be—and already is—the hallmark of leadership today.
The question comes down to this: Do you have the heart, soul, voice, balls (or ovaries) and willingness to be transparent to make it?

Leaders Lead... even when no one gets it!

Paula had let go of what others said she should have kept, and had kept what others said she should let go of.  She understood that everyone had an opinion, and they were entitled to it, However, her position was and is to Be a Leader!

Paula has always been a visionary, and that by its very nature will often make others uncomfortable. Looking at her you would never know that those opposition bothered her, because for the most part it didn’t…

This time was different, this was her closest team members. They were the ones she had let in, the ones with whom she had shared the more intimate details of what it takes to be a leader.

Even though it was evident that they didn’t get it, she couldn’t deny the deep longing that they would.

Nonetheless, Paula knew as all those who step up must know: Real leaders are champions for others, and “the cause.” … and that they must willingly remove the interference that threatens to block the pathways that lead to peak performance and fulfilling experiences.

She had hoped to have inspired her team to a greater level of personal leadership, then despite her disappointment she remembered the central Baron Mastery principle she had learned about Authentic Leadership:

At the forefront of Great Leadership is Authenticity. Great Leaders are REAL!

Many see leadership as a position of prestige, privilege and power. Although those can be elements of what sprouts from leadership, there are many things about leadership that so few are willing to stand up for, up against, or be responsible too.

You and I have seen the armchair athlete criticize the professional athlete for a momentary discretion, without ever considering  the moment by moment focus it takes to play at that level.  The armchair athlete’s judgement and ridicule spills forth without a moments thought for the long hours, days, months and years of dedication and deprivation of more favorable desires in order to pursue a dream.

The Armchair Critic

Paula had seen the “armchair leader” criticize an actual leader who works toward a vision that others can barely even imagine.  The armchair leader does this without  ever considering that an Authentic Leader in anything is in their own way a long distance athlete. As such, chooses to sacrifice things more pleasurable. Oftentimes the thing an authentic leader is willing to sacrifice, is the very thing the armchair leader remains attached to: popularity

Why?
Because Authentic Leadership is every bit as much in the trenches as it is at the pinnacle.

Those who have never been in those trenches will be more than willing to offer you their “wisdom”.  But remember that this so called wisdom is attained without risk (they have never been in the trenches). And wisdom without invested risk is nothing more than a “nice” theory.

An Authentic Leader has likely risked everything on more than one occasion because of their commitment to the vision and or the cause.   Authentic leadership is a responsibility few are willing to bare and many are willing to criticize. That is why:

Leadership is NOT by committee!

Do it, or don’t do it! Do not complain about how much time it’s taking or how much time you have put in.

The pursuit of fulfilling your greatness is NOT a part time thing. You can’t be great in a couple of hours a week, or maybe even in a couple of years… Greatness has a powerful work ethic. If you don’t have that, then abandon the possibility of fulfilling your greatness.

Know this moving forward: Leadership is challenging for many reasons, not least of all because it requires doing what you would rather not do, because it serves the greater vision-mission-purpose.

Leadership is challenging because it requires making decisions about things it would be far easier to put off, or put on someone else, because it serves the greater vision-mission-purpose.

Whatever you have decided to do with what you have learned… If I may, I would offer you a challenge: Be A Leader!

Step up and do what needs to be done. Do not assume that someone else will take care of “it”.

A fresh serving of excitement with a small side of anxiety was about to be chewed up and turned into something magnificent! … The music got louder and he hit the stage with a single intention…To Serve!

Chris Jimenez... Here to serve

On September 9th, 2011 Chris Jimenez hit the stage for the first time as MC for the Baron Mastery event “Claim Your Competitive Edge”.  Chris had quite nervously joined the Baron Mastery Speaker-Leadership training earlier that year. When Chris had started in the training he had struggled to get his head out of the way in order to have his wonderful warm heart to speak to his audience.

That being said he was not alone… Less than a month before, Chris with a number of others from the training had auditioned for this honorable opportunity, and it was close. The three runners up were Deb Cummings, Claudette Brouchard, and Trish Leptick. All had done a spectacular job, however, Chris took the prize.  This was in no way a downgrade for the runners up, you see each of them would be given the rare gift of presenting on the Baron Mastery stage at Claim Your Competitive Edge.

None of them had ever been on a platform speaking in front of an audience of this magnitude before. Each one of them had there own particular recipe for excitement and anxiety. Each one of them was able to move past the obstacles before them by holding to the central principle taught throughout our Speaker-Leadership Training…You are here to serve!

From the moment Chris began to speak the audience was both entertained and inspired. However, among other fabulous messages shared he shared there were a couple of moments where excitement became something far deeper, a heart and soul connection. The eyes of women and men alike filled as his words reached out like a gentle hand of compassion to a hungry child.

Chris spoke of  a surprise Christmas gift, a gift not available even in the most exclusive store. What he shared was not a story about tinsel, Christmas lights or any kind of fabulous designer gifts. This was a story of something far more valuable than any price tag.

As we all sat on the edge of our seats, Chris shared the impact of being a member of the Baron Mastery CORE affluence programs and the value it had brought to his life.  He spoke of being in the best shape of his life, having vastly increased his financial flow and now having more availability to his wife and children.  And then he began to speak of  the profound healing he had not even known he had needed when he entered the program.

Last Christmas Chris took his wife and children and they traveled down to California to be with his father and his fathers family. This is something Chris had done many times and as much as it was a good thing to do, there was always something missing. You see his dad had left the family when Chris was just a little boy. And as so often the case, incomplete memories and the opinions of others become a reality that chokes out the complete truth. Without knowing it this had left both men missing something neither had been able to articulate, and it had remained a secret yearning.

From the moment Chris engaged in being a CORE Affluence Member he became dedicated to his inner journey, because he immediately saw the value this system brought to his life….

Last Christmas, Chris stood face to face with his father, and even though he had done so many times, this time was different…this time he could see this man for the truth of who he is.

This time they were not just eye-to-eye, somehow they were heart-to-heart too. Whats more for the first time he felt his father seeing him for the man he is.  As the two embraced, a miracle took place, for the first time ever their armor cracked and suddenly two men who had deeply missed each other let love between them run freely.

The dam of resentment finally crumbled under the awesome force of something far more powerful; deep compassion. In that moment these two men gifted each other a transformative experience of love. For the first time ever Chris knew with every fiber of his being that his father loved and respected him… Neither man will ever be the same.

Another one of these charmers who I had given ongoing support to, suddenly decided that I should follow their new gurus wisdom and declare it as the “absolute truth.”  Because I was not willing to engage in a right wrong argument this person is now trying to friend all my friends on facebook telling then that I’m a liar and wait for it, this is a new one, “master demon“.

Now let me be clear, I appreciate that everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to it, and that includes the fact that I do not have to accept what I consider to be abuse.  That being said; so am I…

I’m so done with folks who are upset with the fact that I am in business…

All my life I’ve been dedicated to serving others, often giving away much of my value, to “help” those not able to pay. I’ve always done this with authentically generosity. You see for me if you give with strings attached it is not a gift. That being said, it is also important to pay attention to whether the person receiving what you gift is actually valuing that gift.

After many years of research I can tell you without doubt, unless they have skin in the game, (that person is invested) very little, if anything will happen.

Both my company and myself  are mission driven.  That being said, I am in business and businesses do not run on love, light and wishful thinking. Therefore,  if the fact that I let you know I can serve you better through one of my multiple learning systems, (products or live events) upsets you, feel free to remove yourself from my friends on Facebook, Twitter or my email list. I am sure there is someone else can serve you better.

To everyone who chooses to stay on board; thank you for showing yourself as someone who understands the value of investing in your own growth.

I trust that reading this you will begin to fully own your value,  and to those standing around waiting for a hand out of your time, energy or talent, tell them plain and simple…Piss Off!

No matter how much you give, there will always be those who are going to take shots at you.  I heard a great quote the other day that fits perfectly with my point:

“Dogs don’t bark at parked cars” …

So if they’re dogging you, it means your moving baby!

Some people thought I was upset about the above message, in truth…That person offered me a great gift.: Boundaries are a beautiful thing, and just like everyone else I need to be reminded that I am resop0sible for holding my own.

I would put it to you that living anything less than authentically isn’t really living. (Take a look at the video below) Giving away your value is NOT authentic!  Remember that becoming a true leader demands that you fully and authentically show up.

I have said many times… What I offer isn’t for everyone, and I am more than good with that.

Recently some of my peers and myself have been having conversations about privacy or the lack of it when to posting on FaceBook, (even in a group).
We have come to a simple conclusion, one that was addressed in a recent New York Times article: Privacy is Dead!
Bottom line, whether we like it or not we are all out there, (just Google your name)

I have thought long and hard about this, (I was anti social media at first too).
My conclusion is this: We live in a society that is polar in many ways. On one side we have the Jerry Springer kind of trailer trash self exposure, and on the other there is the shut down, repressed, fake a smile and pretend everything is “fine” group. In truth we are still free to choose to NOT live at either end of that spectrum.

What I have come to love about social media is that if we use it well and with discernment it can call us to actually stand in our truth.

To say the things that we believe, and not hide our real feelings. Bottom line is that if you are ashamed of people knowing something that you feel…You are carrying that shame into everything you think, do and say. And maybe its time to come out of the closet and give up that shame.

 Do you really want to operate in your life feeling like you need to edit everything for the approval rating of others? EG: Your ex, your mother-in-law, an old school friend or for that matter anyone else.

All that being said, I do realize some folks will be upset at reading this, and I have got to tell you that, that’s okay. Not because I don’t care, actually its because I do care, that is, about those people who are committed to their growth and authentic transparency is part of that.

As I see it telling your truth is a great filter to find out who your real friends are and maybe, just maybe it is NOT the tons of names accumulated in your friends list on a social media group.
