Set up for Success

Come on, I know we’d like to push the blame off on someone else… However, I believe the issue always falls back on leadership.  For that reason I want to give you a simple 7 step system for moving yourself and your team from perpetual failure to consistent success.

How many times have you heard someone you know say: (insert whinny voice here) “I’d like to… but”, “I want to”, “I’m Gunna”, “I’ll try”? These are all language patterns that set you put you up for failure.

If you want consistent success you must…

• First: Decide (root word dēcīsiō literally, a cutting off), meaning that there is no other option.
  
• Second: Find a Guide, a Coach or preferably a Mentor (yes there is a difference) Someone who can not only guide you, but more importantly someone who can and will hold your feet to the fire if you are going off track.
• Third: Set time lines and measure results. This way you can see if you are getting progress and what’s more if what you were getting results with is still giving you results you desire. (tweak rather than change tracks)
• Forth: Be consistent! One of the greatest failing of our society is the desire for instant gratification…So be consistent and be patient, there is no such thing as an over night success.
• Fifth: Environment! Put yourself in an environment that supports you reaching your goals. To often people fail because the people they surround themselves with don’t get “it” (whatever it is you are going for)
• Sixth: Embrace failure, understand that failure is nothing more than feedback as to how Not to do it.
• Seventh: Celebrate every little success along the way! We are societally trained to play our success’ down.  However, you get more of whatever you reinforce. So reenforce every little success.

Leadership: A NO wimp Zone!

But that’s not the only reason.

One of the major reasons I’m leaving is that I feel a pull to speak out and do something about the appalling state of leadership in our world today, (in all categories). And make no mistake…

Leadership in our world is in an appalling state at the moment.

That’s why from here on in, you may find my posts to be a little more edgy, certainly more opinionated, and rarely politically correct!

That being said, I would have you note that I am NOT a hater.

I am a believer!

I believe in the power of the individual in their own life. I believe that when we come together with a common vision or mission, we can change the world.

Leaders Who Inspired Us

The deeply inspiring speeches of JFK’s “Ask Not What Your Country Can Do for You…” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” showed me that “something bigger and better” was possible.

As a fourteen-year-old boy who had just moved from the urban ghetto of the Bullrings of Hulme in Manchester to Cheetham Hill, a place on the edge of middle classdom, I began to feel something bigger.

I began to believe that something better was possible

As I lay there on my elbows, my mother entered the room and I immediately looked up at her and told her: “I’m going to live there!” She asked “Where?” and with unwavering certainty I stated, “America!”

Born in Briton, I knew my own country was (and maybe still is) a country separated by class identification. Where you were born and what school both you and your father went to could determined your life’s path in a single sentence. America to me was the land of the free, a place where it didn’t matter what class you were born into.

In America, you were entitled to your opinion and you could claim a space to share it…After all it WAS Article 1 in the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE I of the Bill of Rights

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

So now, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Americans and everyone else…

I put it to you that one of the foundational traits of an Authentic Full Monty Leader is their ability to actively listen.

I would also go so far as to say that when a “leader” stops listening or,  for that matter, finds a way to gag those he or she is supposed to be leading, this is no longer anything resembling what American Leadership was built on.

What’s more, if indeed the US is a world leader, then it stands to reason that other countries will follow that lead.

Which brings me to something that is sincerely unnerving!

Freedom of Speech… NOT!

On Friday, July 6 , 2012 US President Barack Obama quietly signed his name to an Executive Order, allowing the White House to control all private communications in the country in the name of national security. (Yes I know this is “old news” however, I have come to realize for the most part many people have absolutely no idea this is happening)

President Obama released his latest Executive Order , a 2,205-word statement offered as the “Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.”

In explaining the order, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) writes that the president has authorized the Department of Homeland Security “the authority to seize private facilities when necessary, effectively shutting down or limiting civilian communications.” Suggesting that the president has indeed effectively just allowed himself to control the country’s Internet access!

THIS is Authentic Full Monty Leadership?

I think not! Effectively isn’t this the bill that will gag The Bill of Right?

So let me take this moment to address President Obama directly:

Mister President,

On the day you were elected people openly wept, not just because a man of color had taken up residence in the White House, but because genuine hope had returned to America after what had seemed like the madness of the last administration.

For so many Americans, the vision, hope and mission of JFK and MLK had somehow found its way home.

Now, with this and many other Executive Orders and congressional laws passed during your administration, the foreboding cloud of the Patriot Act has cast a dark shadow in the valley of hope.

So I ask…

Were you always this guy? Nothing more than an eloquently spoken George W Bush?

Or does the man who breathed the hope of change back into America still have enough hope left in his own message to return to becoming the man, the president, we hoped for?

I and I would suggest the American people want to know: Do you have what it takes to be n Authentic leader, President Obama?

Do You Have The Courage To Be Great?

Imagine the moment where the caterpillar is pulling the last strand around its self.

The last strand that will encase it and for all intense and purposes end its life as a caterpillar… The fear must be immense!
And yet it does what it must do, even if it does not know what with happen, it has to trust that a metamorphosis awaits on the other side of what feels like death.

There is within you a calling… It is the calling of your greatness. However, to get to it you must understand that you cannot become that greatness and still remain who you have been any more than a caterpillar can be both caterpillar and butterfly.

When Anita stepped in front of her two kids, she could feel her very insides shake. She knew very well that she was placing herself in the direct line of fire of verbal abuse from their father.

Anita had grown up receiving this kind of treatment in her own childhood home. In fact, it was accepted and pretty much expected. Even though it was a secret to be “kept within the walls of this house,“  it was accepted as the family “normal.”

However, as Anita stepped up this wasn’t about what had go on for her, this was about something bigger…

By stepping in front of her children, she was setting a boundary as to what was going to be acceptable for her own children…and just as importantly, what was not.

• The first principle of owning the Leadership Mindset is Courage

Full Monty Leaders do not stand around complaining. They have the courage to step out and take action.

To be a leader you must be willing to ask difficult questions, particularly of yourself. Questions like:
→ Are you One of the Million, or One in a Million?

Unless we are watching the news and listening to some political pundit complain, most of us never really think about leadership – What it is, what it takes, or what the effects of great, solid leadership can be.  As a result, many times we don’t even realize that we are being presented with the opportunity to lead when we are moving through our everyday situations.

All too often, we don’t even start thinking about leadership and our development as a leader until it is, for whatever reason, suddenly thrust upon us. However, leadership, in its truest form, is not so much a title as a mindset.

Owning The Leadership Mindset: Some would describe the leadership mindset as a set of beliefs, values and attitudes directed to empower people. Others speak of leaders being born not made, and that the “mindset” was either there or not. Still other believe that leadership is absolutely dictatorial, a “our leader, right or wrong” position.

We can go many different directions in addressing these attitudes. However, within the confines of this particular article we will look at the mindset of leadership as making a shift in thinking and priorities, which moves your focus from “you” to “us,” from “me” to “we.”

Stay with me here, because what I’m suggesting is that the real glory in leadership comes not from what you accomplish, but rather from what you assist others in accomplishing. Full Monty Leadership is a selfless journey of empowering people to step up, to better themselves and perform to their greatest potential.

All of which is demonstrated by you as a leader. A great moment in leadership occurs when you, as a leader, lift someone upon your shoulders to see the previously impossible as a reachable possibility…

Look, I know you’re obviously smart enough to question what you have been fed by the media and social propaganda because you are reading this…

You Are Now Entering The No B.S. Zone!

So let me repeat my question:  Are there any REAL Leaders left?

Before I answer, I have to ask another question: Do you want to hear the absolute truth?  

I’m talking about the raw truth and definitely Not some buttered up, make it sound better than it is bunch of B.S.  What I’m talking about  is just you and me, sitting across the table from each other speaking our truth.

(A word of caution…. What you are about to read will likely piss some people off. Maybe even you!)

If you are ready to hear the absolute truth then I’m here to tell you that…

There are no REAL Leaders anymore.

Don’t believe me? Take a look around.

You and I both know that leadership in its present form is a about as effective as a Jell-O© bullet.

The problem is, we’ve been trained to believe someone is a leader because of position, title or accumulation of goodies, and it’s about time we realized; that’s not “real” leadership.

So let’s boil leadership down to its core…  

 You are a leader if you have people who have consciously decided to follow you.

Note that I said consciously. That means they aren’t following you because they have to, they’re supposed to, or for any other reason than you, their leader, are the example of the way they want to be!

So let’s take a look at some so-called leaders we have today.

Profit without ethics

Many “leaders” in the business world have ripped off their employees, their investors and just about anyone who they could talk into parting with their money.

Now of course that’s not true of all business leaders, but those who aren’t rip-off artists are struggling to do anything that even resembles real leadership. They struggle to hold a vision, a mission, and a healthy corporate culture together, let alone a profit. So many tug their forelock with a “Yes sir, profit at any cost” mentality.

You, me, our kids, and our environment keep paying the price of companies who don’t give a rats “you know what” about anything other than profit, because profit seems to have a much higher priority over ethics. And for so many of these clowns social responsibility has become little more than another marketing ploy.

Then there are the so-called leaders in religion who are for the most part no better. Many of them are busy telling everyone who will listen that their followers are better than everyone else. The religious leaders insist that their God and their rules are better, and more civilized than the God and rules of other religions. Therefore, anyone of another faith is just not as good.

We’re good you’re bad

They tell us that anyone who doesn’t follow their rules is going to hell in a hand basket for not having accepted “the right” way.

Come on people, is that how the person who started your faith would have behaved? I think not! Actually, I think that if the originator of your faith returned, s/he might be quite pissed off at all the blame and judgment done in his or her name.

Is it just me or, haven’t we done this before? You know the saying: Those who refuse to examine history are destined to repeat it!

 And while we’re at it, let’s not ignore the half-assed version of political leadership we are supposed to choose from. These folks are so busy telling us their opposition is wrong that they would rather watch the countries economy get flushed down the crapper than actually act like leaders and find a way to come together for the common good.

You and I both know that for the most part, politicians are nothing more than a bunch of ego-driven, overly ambitious, lying monkeys wearing patriotic colors.

They are willing to put our country at war with other countries, but they will not put on the uniform and stand on the front line.

Money and politics a bad marriage

Plus, these guys and gals change their minds and policies more often than their underwear (depending on what wealthy individual or corporation has bought their latest opinion).

While we are at it I’m deeply saddened to say; even the so-called leaders in my own industry of personal and professional development are sadly lacking.

Hello…we are supposed to be the example! We are supposed to be leading the way in shaping people’s minds! Instead what the personal development industry offers is so often little more than snake oil salesmen and women.  (Okay, so my secret is out. This is one of the reasons I am leaving the public seminar business. I do not want my reputation in discussed in the same breath as some of these douchey individuals)

So what it all comes down to is this…

You and I both know there are NO REAL Leaders left!

I have to admit, until recently I was quite puzzled as to why this should be, when suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks.

In a time where “reality TV” isn’t actually “real” but scripted down to the last sneeze, it becomes obvious that for so many of the leaders today in all of those areas I’ve talked about  and many more Not mentioned here, being Real and Authentic and being a leader are NOT part of the same sentence.

It’s the reason I completely shifted gears, There are no “real” leaders left, so I am creating them!

This is of course where I have got to put my money where my mouth is…

This means I have got to be willing to totally show up, be real and become nakedly authentically and share whatever is in front of me.

Is this difficult? You bet it is.
Full Monty, Authentic Leadership is NOT easy! But you know what? Gandhi (now that was a real leader) was absolutely right: We must be the change we want to see.

I’ll admit that I’m not there yet. Maybe I’ll never get there, but I will never stop striving towards greater transparency as a leader and greater authenticity in all that I do.

My question to you is:

Do you have the “balls/ovaries” to be a real leader,
a Full Monty Leader ?

New Leadership: Leading From Your Mirror Neurons

I know you may have the title of leader, however that doesn’t automatically make you one.

You must know this: You cannot lead those whose trust you have not earned!

I realize that some folks don’t believe we evolved…everyone to there own.

That being said there is another side to evolution worth considering; that being, are we still evolving?

Over the last twenty or so years, it has become clear that the answer is a resounding YES! The scientific evidence says that as humans have evolved our brain does not work the way the brain of our ancestors did. As part of this ongoing evolution we have created within our brains a specific type of neuron called “mirror neurons.”  These neurons give us the desire to understand and empathize with one another.

It is our ability to (mostly unconsciously) fire off our mirror neurons that give us a way to connect with others whom we we otherwise dismiss. This in turn, despite what we might tell ourselves, gives us a natural propensity to trust.

A word of caution though: Trust is not automatic, nor is it “blind” (I.E: because of status), but rather it is accumulated. Meaning those neurons don’t just fire off once and then you’ve got built in trust.

Guess what? For trust to actually “stick” it requires Authenticity, Transparency, Accountability. (or simply put for you to become a Full Monty Leader)

As you can see, it’s only logical that in an economic era where organizations are scrambling to hold on to their top people, creating an environment that breeds loyalty must become a top priority. 

As leaders you and I both know: Throwing money at the problem and competing on salary no longer cuts it.  As leaders we must create a Corporate Culture that is an environment that generates trust, because trust based on Authenticity, Transparency, Accountability enforces loyalty not only among your team, but also your customers.

Bottom line is…Trust breeds loyalty and in turn brings prosperity. This happens because there is a deepened sense of connection that enhances performance, birthing high achievers in your organization.

Remember this: An Authentic Leader is always creating a culture of leaders.

The more  Authentic, Transparent and Accountable you are, the more trusted you will be!

Faisal _Big Dog Khattak The Anti Bullying Guy

I am happy to see so many people are stepping into a leadership role with regard to posting blogs, teaching seminars and generally raising awareness about the implications of our children being bullied or becoming bully’s…

Last night I had the honour of introducing my friend and protege Faisal Khattak-Big Dög as he was speaking on the very important subject of Bullying…

Faisal openly shared his own shocking and painful story of being a 5 year old boy who was raped and continuously bullied while at school. Faisal went on to explain that for him, and for most kids who are either bullied or become bullies; bullying starts at home.

Faisal went on to challenge us all to take a look at how we may be either consciously or unconsciously setting our kids up to be bullies or to get bullied. He gave us some rock solid tools and skills that everyone could take home and help their kids right away with.

He went on to share with us why he believes Bullying is now at an an epidemic level and what you can do to Bully Proof your child right away. I think he even shocked some folks when he shared what it is that turns a kid into a bully.

That being said: May I suggest that we all take a look at the bigger picture around bullying.

Maybe you yourself have experienced what it feels like to be bullied, not just as a child but even as an adult…

Imagine for a moment that you overheard someone speaking about you, or something you supposedly did.  You know for sure that this person does not really know you, they certainly do not know your circumstances or the true nature of your character.

Nonetheless, here they are using their words to to attack you, your character, or your physicality. In that moment, don’t you feel bullied?

Let’s face it a bully exerts power over someone who feels powerless to do anything about it!

Whether directly or indirectly our words can be used to bully and damage another.

You know as well as I do that at it’s core bullying  is a process that chips away at the self worth of another, until they feel ashamed and not good enough.

Doing this we dehumanize another and we treat the person being bullied as if they have no soul. In so doing we have moved away from our own true compassionate nature and into soulless behaviour.

When someone who does not truly know you speaks poorly of you or your situation, we call it “harmless gossip”. What I am suggesting is that in order to raise our own awareness as leaders of our families a

nd our communities we need to call it by it true name: bullying! I myself, I am ashamed to say have been guilty of this and I urge you to also consider raising your own awareness around this kind of behaviour.

Let’s remember that everyone from the homeless to the most famous celebrity have a soul. Despite what we hear or are told, let’s remember that we do not ever fully know who someone is or why they did a certain thing at a certain time.

Every time we gossip or add to the gossip about someone we do not personally know, (IE a celebrity) we are in fact bullying…

Isn’t NOW the time to step up to the next level of behavioural awareness? To be a leader who has the courage to NOT do what seems okay, but rather, step into excellence?

How Come The Are No Leaders  with Real balls/Ovaries Anymore?

From the hallway I could hear the muffled sound of the TV in the other room. Curiosity pulled me into that room to find my mother crying, watching our old black and white TV set.

I glanced at the set where I saw a man I didn’t recognize speaking in a way that commanded my attention.  As compelling as this man was, there was something else going on in that room that had an even stronger pull… my mother.

Looking over at my mom I saw her dislodge her glasses upwards as she wiped a steady stream of tears from her eyes. I had seen my mother cry many times. To be honest at that point in our lives there seemed to be an abundance of reasons for my mom to be in tears, but this was different.

As a ten year old boy seeing my mother cry was something that always disturbed me. I walked over, put my hand on my mom’s shoulder and in an attempt to comfort her I asked what was wrong. Looking up at me, she tried to smile but it clearly wasn’t working. She stumbled for words and pointed at the TV saying: “He’s dead?” I looked back at the set and the powerful charismatic presence of Martin Luther King Jr. rang out like a bell in the fog.

I was a boy living in a ghetto environment of a dirty industrial town in England, I had no idea why my mother would be crying about a man I didn’t think I’d ever seen before. I didn’t recognize him as a movie star, a pop star or even a British politician. Why was she crying? In my boyish naivety I asked “who is he?” My mom said; “that’s Martin Luther King, someone shot him.” I was still puzzled. My mom continued through a flood of tears and said; “He was a great man, and now he’s dead”.

I became fascinated with finding out who this man had been. I asked my uncle who I considered to be the smartest person I knew and he told me of Martin Luther King’s fight for civil rights; how Dr. King had followed Gandhi’s model of peaceful demonstrations. He told me of all the people black and white people alike who had stood by Dr. King’s side for the civil rights of all people.

April 4^th 1968 was the day I not only became politically aware, it was the day something within my very soul was awakened.

I began to grasp the difference this man had made, the impact he had left as a legacy, not just for black people but for all people. That day I began to understand that one person can make a massive positive difference. That day as a naive 10 year old I decided that I wanted to have the same kind of massively powerful impact on humanity that Dr. King had had on humanity, including my mother a Jewish woman living in a place that might have been a million miles away.

I of course, had no idea how I could make that difference; and to be honest, it seemed impossible based on the “facts” of who I was and the environment that surrounded me. I just knew that day that something within me had changed and it would never be the same.

Many people have seen Dr. King’s message as a message about freedom for black people. To me, his message was much deeper than color or creed. It was about the understanding that we are all the same, that at a deeper more soulful level we are all on a journey, and it’s important to remove the blocks to our mental,  emotional and Personal and Leadership Evolution.

That being said; although we may perceive those blocks as being outside ourselves, the truth is that they would all instantly disappear if we would commit to removing the ones on the inside.  If you want to be a better leaders a Full Monty Leader you will need to grow a pair!  Real Authentic leadership takes courage, the kind of courage Martin Luther King and the people of all colours who stood on the front lines of the civil rights movement had.

40+ plus years ago something tragic happened, a great man, a man who will remain a giant, died. I still see more of the injustices he fought against than we would prefer. However, that tragic event gave birth to a flood of awaking and opportunities that has changed the world.

The Need for Dr. King’s message is I believe, even stronger today than it was in the 60’s. Today is Martin Luther King day, it’s a day we can be sad for the loss of a great man, or a day we can rejoice for the difference he made that we benefit from, no matter what our colour or creed is. Martin Luther King the man is gone.  However, I believe that right now we need to stand up for our civil rights regardless of our colour or creed. For me it seems that Dr King was trying to teach us… we are all one. We are not blacks, whites, yellow or purple striped. We are not just Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or anything else they can use to separate us…We are humanity. That means that, nothing, and I mean nothing, can separate us from the truth of who we truly are, not racial profiling, not extremists of any colour or religious belief, not even war.

Remember this always:

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” – Edmund Burke

When you let yourself truly know this, then it that moment you are, I believe, keeping Martin Luther King’s Dream Alive

Don't Believe The Hype it's a Sequel!

Flip on the news and you’ll see an announcer saying in a worried tone of voice:  “We are headed for the fiscal cliff.  We could soon be in a double-dip recession!”  Images of people running and screaming as if being chased by Godzilla flash on the screen.

You can feel your chest start to tighten and you begin to wonder, if not go into a full blow anxiety attack, about what is going to happen if we do go over that cliff.

Don’t believe the hype! It’s a sequel!

It’s all scare tactics and although it’s incredibly important to not allow yourself to be force-fed by the media’s negative hype, you also can’t afford to play ignorant.

So let me see if I can assist you in putting the whole thing in perspective.

First off, what’s the difference between the National Debt and the Deficits?

The deficit is the difference between the money the Government takes in, called receipts, versus what the Government spends.

National Debt is the sum of the accumulated deficits.

The Government has been spending a lot more money than it takes in for years, so now the National Debt is so far out of reach that there is no end in sight.

Now let me be clear on this.  If you ran a business the way both parties have run the US for the last forty or so years, you would be in jail.  And yes, I did say forty plus years.

The economic situation in the US is not because President Obama is behaving like a socialist, (Do your research folks.  He doesn’t even come close to being a socialist.)

This is not even a George W Bush mess that was left for Obama to clean up.

Nope, it goes back much further than that.  Bill Clinton did his part as well.  Yes, the beloved President Bill Clinton whom we hold up as generating a massive boom time for the US helped create this mess by repealing the Glass–Steagall law.  This was a law that governed the banks and stopped them doing many of the things they did to create the economic bubble.

Many economic experts have stated that repealing the Glass–Steagall Act and its affiliation restrictions was an important cause of the recession we are still recovering from.

And despite some people choosing amnesia, Regan’s trickledown economics was a middle class and working class farce.

Before all that, Nixon removed the Gold Standard on the dollar, which, over time, has resulted in your money literally not being worth the paper it is printed on. 

You can see multi administration cluster fu*k! You may ask: Where is the real, the authentic leadership?

truth be told, politicians jump on and off bandwagons more often than they change their underwear.  Take a look at Mitt Romney: He started out as a moderate, then became an extreme conservative and by the time he was in the presidential debates he was back being a moderate.  During the campaign, Republicans talked about Romney as if he was the Second Coming, then after he lost, they scattered like bugs off a burning mattress.

There hasn’t been authentic leadership in the US for a very long time, and as a result, there is no real loyalty!

Not in the parties, not in the leadership and increasingly so not even among party members. I believe American’s are sick of parties that fight about who’s right.

It’s time to stop being Republican, Democrat or anything else and go back to being American!

Bottom line: You cannot build Fierce Loyalty without Authentic Leadership!
